From a racer's perspective, Hearts offers the benefits of belonging to a team of competitive riders who really love the sport. Racing can be as much a matter of teamwork and strategy as much as individual athletic performance. It's a good feeling to have your teammates working together with you in a race. Plus, it's easier to train when you have people to train with. And who better than your teammates to give you valuable pointers on improving your skills. Not to mention the cool jerseys and shorts, right? Hearts members can also be proud of the many cycling events that the club promotes, by itself and with others, throughout the year. Hearts was there during the heyday of bicycle racing in this area with the Hanes Park Criterium that began in the late seventies. The tradition continues with the third year of the Dixie Classic Criterium Series, offering racing under the lights at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds twice a month during the season. Other events include the Tanglewood Biathlon, the Moratuck Triathlon, and the Golding Farm Foods Tanglewood Mountain Bike Race. Members of the club are also involved in cycling advocacy activities, including the recent building of many miles of mountain bike trails within Tanglewood Park and Horizons Park. Members of the club also helped Ken Putnam and Judy Wallace with the creation of the popular book, "Great Rides In And Around Winston-Salem." From a recreational rider's point of view, the members of the club have been leading weekend rides from Lewisville for longer than anyone really cares to admit to. We'll admit that they have been lots of fun, though. "Are we going to ride, or what?" |
